01

Overview

OpenAI introduced Sponsored Agents on September 16, 2026 as a new conversational advertising experience inside ChatGPT. After seeing a relevant ad, a user can choose to start a clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent. OpenAI says this sponsored conversation is distinct from ChatGPT's independent answers and separate from the user's original ChatGPT conversation. Sponsored Agents are currently being tested with select advertisers in the United States.

The format changes what can happen after an ad impression. Instead of sending every interested user immediately to a landing page, a Sponsored Agent can let the person ask follow-up questions about a product or service, explain what matters to them, and then follow a link to the advertiser's website when they are ready to take the next step.

02

What are ChatGPT Sponsored Agents?

Sponsored Agents are business-sponsored conversational agents that a user can optionally enter after interacting with a ChatGPT ad. OpenAI describes them as clearly labeled sponsored conversations. They are not part of ChatGPT's independent answer to the user's original question.

That separation matters. OpenAI's broader advertising policy says ads do not influence ChatGPT's independent responses. Sponsored Agents extend the advertising experience into a separate conversation rather than inserting advertiser-generated answers into the original assistant response.

03

How do Sponsored Agents work?

The confirmed first-party flow is straightforward: 1. A user sees a relevant, clearly labeled ad in ChatGPT. 2. The user chooses whether to start a conversation with the advertiser's Sponsored Agent. 3. Inside that separate sponsored conversation, the user can explain needs and ask follow-up questions. 4. The Sponsored Agent can help the user understand the advertiser's product or service. 5. The user can follow a link to the business's website when ready to continue.

OpenAI's launch example describes someone seeing a dining-table ad and asking whether the table fits their space, how many people it seats, or how to care for it. This illustrates the intended use case; it should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every advertiser or product category receives identical agent capabilities.

04

Are Sponsored Agents available now?

Yes, but only as a limited test. OpenAI says Sponsored Agents are being tested with select advertisers in the United States as of September 16, 2026.

There is not yet a verified general-public launch date or global rollout schedule. Businesses should not assume that ordinary ChatGPT Ads account access automatically includes Sponsored Agents.

05

How can businesses join the Sponsored Agents beta?

OpenAI has a registration-of-interest form associated with Sponsored Agents and HubSpot. The form says access is limited and subject to review, and submitting it does not guarantee participation or a launch date.

OpenAI says advertisers may need to meet eligibility criteria including creative automation, automatic bidding, and a minimum daily ad spend maintained for 28 days. Crucially, the form does not publish the final required spend amount or currency; it says final criteria and the spend requirement will be confirmed before onboarding.

Do not treat those possible criteria as a universal permanent policy. They describe the current beta-interest process and can change.

06

Why Sponsored Agents matter for marketers

Traditional digital ads usually compress the path between impression and landing page into a click. Sponsored Agents insert an optional conversational layer between those two steps.

For products or services that create predictable pre-purchase questions, that could make the ad experience more useful. A prospective buyer might ask about fit, compatibility, features, service scope or other decision criteria before leaving ChatGPT.

The practical opportunity for advertisers is therefore not simply 'make an AI chatbot.' Businesses need accurate product/service information, clear claims, reliable handoff to their website, and a way to keep sponsored answers aligned with current offers and availability.

09

Pricing and limits

OpenAI has not published universal standalone pricing for Sponsored Agents. It has also not published a general quota for agent conversations, a universal minimum spend, or a final worldwide eligibility policy.

The current interest form mentions a possible minimum daily ad-spend requirement over 28 days, but explicitly says the amount and currency will be confirmed before onboarding. Any article claiming a specific universal Sponsored Agent price or minimum spend without newer first-party documentation would be speculation.

10

What else launched with Sponsored Agents?

The September 16 announcement is part of a broader ChatGPT Ads expansion. OpenAI also introduced natural-language campaign creation, updating and analysis through the Ads Manager plugin in ChatGPT; AI assistance for ad copy and imagery; optional contextual text customization and translation; a HubSpot integration; and a Shopify ChatGPT Ads app.

Those changes belong to the broader ChatGPT Ads canonical and dedicated workflow pages rather than being overloaded into this Sponsored Agents guide.
