Overview
Zendesk Specialized AI Agents are a new layer of purpose-built AI agents designed to complete specific service and business workflows rather than simply answer questions. Zendesk announced the product on September 14, 2026, splitting the concept into two forms: Industry Agents and Custom Agents.
Industry Agents start with prebuilt expertise for workflows common to a particular industry. The first launch focus is commerce. Zendesk says commerce agents can help shoppers find products, manage orders, process returns and exchanges, resolve delivery problems and handle refunds. The company says it plans to expand Industry Agents into financial services, media and technology, but it has not published firm rollout dates for those industries.
Custom Agents are built around an individual organization's own policies, knowledge, connected systems, actions and approval rules. Zendesk's Agent Builder is the no-code environment for creating, testing and deploying them. A business defines the job the agent owns, which systems it may use, which actions it may take and where human approval is required.
02
Industry Agents vs Custom Agents
That distinction matters. An Industry Agent provides a starting layer of domain expertise; a Custom Agent is shaped around the business's particular operating rules. Zendesk also says Industry Agents can be customized with instructions, knowledge, policies, workflows, connected systems, actions, escalation rules and tone.
Specialized Agents are designed to act, not only converse. Zendesk lists workflows including order tracking, returns and exchanges, refunds, address changes, product recommendations, fraud verification, account updates, subscription management, case routing and escalation. Custom Agents can also run proactively in response to business events or on a schedule, extending automation beyond a customer starting a conversation.
Zendesk says these agents can run inside Zendesk and in external service environments including Salesforce and ServiceNow. This is important for organizations that want specialized automation without replacing their existing service platform. Zendesk positions the product as part of its broader Autonomous Service Workforce and Resolution Platform strategy.
03
Evidence, pricing and plan boundaries
Zendesk reports that customers executed more than one million Custom Agent runs during the first seven weeks and says some customers saw automated resolution rates increase by 10% after deployment. These are vendor-reported figures, not independent benchmarks. Zendesk also markets Specialized Agents around automating up to 80% of workflows; that should be read as a product claim rather than a guaranteed outcome for a particular business.
Pricing is less simple than a single Specialized Agents subscription. Zendesk's current customer-service pricing starts at $19 per agent per month billed yearly for Support Team, while Suite Team is listed at $55 and Suite Professional at $115. AI Agents are included in Suite and Support plans, but AI-agent usage is priced around successful automated resolutions and plan allowances. Zendesk says customers receive a resolution allowance and can pre-purchase additional allowance; resolutions can fall into tiers based on the value delivered. Because Specialized Agents do not currently have a separately published fixed price on the launch page, buyers should verify their plan entitlement, included allowance and resolution pricing before purchase.
This launch builds on earlier 2026 changes. Zendesk had already expanded advanced agentic AI-agent capabilities across Suite and Support plans and introduced Agent Builder. The September launch creates a clearer product category around agents specialized by industry or business-specific job.
04
Deployment, actions and human controls
For commerce teams, the practical difference from a conventional support bot is the ability to connect policy, customer context and backend actions. A returns agent, for example, can inspect an order, evaluate eligibility against policy, collect needed information, initiate the return, update the customer and escalate an exception with context preserved. Whether every action is available depends on the connected systems and permissions configured by the business.
Human control remains part of the model. Teams define escalation and approval boundaries, and Zendesk says human agents can step in with conversation context when judgment or expertise is required. That makes permissions, connected-system scope and approval design central to a safe deployment.
