What launched

Mastra announced the Factory beta on September 8, 2026. The company describes it as the internal system it built to automate its own software work before releasing it publicly. How Mastra Factory works

Factory is organized around configurable lifecycle stages. Mastra's own example is Intake → Triage → Planning → Build → Review → Done. Teams can change those stages and decide whether each step runs manually or automatically.

At each stage, agents operate in sandboxed environments under stage-specific rules. A work item keeps an agent session that includes chat, tool activity and workspace files. Humans can inspect diffs, answer questions, change plans, approve actions and decide whether a pull request should merge.

Mastra says Factory can connect GitHub, Linear and Slack. GitHub and Linear can supply issues and pull requests to the workflow, while Slack can participate in team coordination. The main value is not simply another coding chat interface: Factory attempts to preserve one workflow from intake through reviewed implementation.

Can it work with an existing codebase?

Yes. Mastra's product documentation says teams can connect an existing GitHub repository. Factory can inspect the codebase, plan a requested change, implement it, run checks and open a pull request. Human review remains part of the default workflow.

Starter is $0/month and currently includes 100,000 observability events, 24 CPU hours and 15 days of data retention, with unlimited users, deployments and projects. Usage beyond the included amounts is billed separately according to the listed overage rates.

Teams is $250/month and currently includes 1 million observability events, 250 CPU hours, six months of data retention, multiple teams, SSO and SOC 2 documentation. Enterprise uses custom pricing and adds enterprise controls and support.

These are platform prices, not a universal all-in cost for running coding agents. Model-provider usage and other infrastructure can create additional expense depending on configuration.

What makes Factory different from a coding agent?

A coding agent usually starts with a task and produces code. Factory tries to manage the surrounding software-development lifecycle as well: intake, clarification, planning, isolated execution, review and completion. Its configurable stages and explicit human gates are therefore at least as important as the underlying coding model.

Where it may fit best

Factory is most relevant to teams with a steady stream of structured engineering work: feature requests, bug fixes, refactors, tests and maintenance tasks. It may also be useful to agencies maintaining many repositories because repeatable stage rules can reduce the amount of manual coordination around each change.

Mastra also says the open-source system can be adapted beyond software development to other multi-step processes such as content production, research or data analysis. That is a capability of the underlying framework rather than evidence that every non-coding workflow is mature today.

Factory is still in beta. Its productivity numbers are vendor-reported, not independently validated. Real results will depend on repository quality, test coverage, issue clarity, model choice, tool permissions and how much autonomy a team allows.
