01
Decide whether the label actually applies
Ask whether the person viewers believe they are following is AI-generated. Genuine virtual influencers and synthetic spokespeople fit the rule; real people using AI for editing or content assistance generally do not under this profile-level policy.
- Synthetic person: disclose when the control is available.
- Real person using AI-assisted production: follow any media-level disclosure rules instead.
- Incorrect classification: review Account Status and use the appeal path.
02
How to enable the disclosure
Instagram's announcement says covered creators can edit their profile and toggle on AI-generated profile. Exact menu placement can vary during rollout, so verify the current app interface rather than relying on a static screenshot.
- Open the profile and choose Edit profile.
- Find the AI-generated profile disclosure when available.
- Enable it, save, and confirm that the label appears on the profile.
03
Check reach and Account Status
If Instagram identifies an unlabeled synthetic-person profile, inspect Account Status and recommendation eligibility. Do not infer a restriction from a single underperforming post.
- Check explicit policy notices.
- Compare non-follower, Reels and Explore distribution over a meaningful period.
- Instagram has not promised a universal restoration time after disclosure.
04
Appeal only when the identity classification is wrong
For a real human account incorrectly classified as synthetic, keep the appeal factual: the person is real, while AI may have been used in editing or production. A genuine AI persona should normally disclose rather than appeal its underlying identity.
- Use the review or appeal option exposed in Account Status when present.
- Distinguish AI-edited media from an AI-generated person.
- Keep records of the notice, appeal date and outcome.
