What is the Model Hardware Standard?
MHS is a shared interface for AI agents to communicate with and operate physical devices. Anthropic describes examples including microscopes, liquid handlers, robotic arms and quantum-computing equipment. The goal is to reduce the custom integration work normally required when equipment from different vendors cannot easily communicate.
Anthropic says the standard can let an agent coordinate multiple instruments, reason through experimental steps, update parameters as conditions change and in some cases recover from hardware errors without human intervention. These are Anthropic's stated capabilities for the research preview, not independent performance benchmarks.

Why Anthropic built MHS
Scientific and manufacturing environments often combine hardware from multiple vendors. Connecting those systems can require bespoke software and specialist integration work. Anthropic says MHS can reduce some integrations from weeks or months to hours or minutes by giving compatible programmable devices a shared way to communicate with agents and one another.
The larger idea is autonomous or semi-autonomous workflows: an agent could coordinate instruments across a long experiment or production task instead of requiring a human to manually bridge every system.

What hardware can MHS control?
Anthropic's launch material names microscopes, liquid handlers, robotic arms and equipment used for tasks such as laser calibration on quantum computers. Anthropic says the standard works with any device that exposes a programmable interface.
That does not mean every existing physical device is automatically compatible. Hardware without a programmable interface may require new firmware, adapters or manufacturer support. Anthropic has not published a complete compatibility list.

Is MHS only for Claude?
No. Anthropic describes MHS as model-agnostic and says any agent harness can access it through standard protocols such as MCP. This is important because the value of a standard depends on equipment and applications not being tied to one model vendor.

MHS vs MCP
MHS and the Model Context Protocol (MCP) address different layers. MCP became a standard for connecting AI applications to software tools, data and services. MHS extends the standardization idea into physical equipment: machines, instruments and robotics.
The distinction matters enough to deserve its own comparison guide. In short, think of MCP as connecting agents to software context and tools, while MHS is aimed at connecting agents to programmable physical systems. The exact technical relationship should be checked against Anthropic's implementation documentation as MHS matures.

Is Model Hardware Standard open source?
Not yet as of August 28, 2026. Anthropic says it plans to open-source MHS, but the company is first sharing an early version with research and manufacturing partners to develop safety evaluations and deployment guidance.
There is currently no verified public repository, final license or exact open-source release date in the launch material. Any article claiming a specific license or download today should be treated cautiously unless Anthropic publishes it.

Safety is part of the preview
Physical agents can create risks that software-only agents do not: damaged equipment, unsafe motion, dangerous experimental conditions or misuse. Anthropic says the preview will be used to build additional safety evaluations, strengthen protections for physical-world AI use and produce a physical safety roadmap before broader open-source release.
That means the current preview should be understood as both a technical and safety-evaluation phase, not a finished universal standard.

Why MHS could matter
If a common hardware protocol gains adoption, developers could spend less time writing one-off integrations for every instrument. Labs could coordinate equipment from multiple vendors, manufacturers could connect agentic software to existing automation systems, and AI models could potentially move between compatible hardware environments with less custom work.
The biggest unanswered question is adoption. Standards become useful when device makers, software vendors and developers implement them. Anthropic has named a significant group of early partners, but it is too early to know whether MHS will become a broadly adopted physical-AI standard.
